Waiting

Beginning in 2020 at the very start of the pandemic when most of us found ourselves with a great deal more time on our hands, I began photographing the moments when I found myself with little else to do but to wait, usually in a supermarket queue on those rare days we could venture out. These moments in between events interest me as, with nothing to focus on, the brain starts to wander and I pick up on minor details, strange locations and interesting sights.

As the project began to form, I set a few rules to work within. Firstly, I had to be waiting. No travelling between situations or wandering from place to place. There are plenty of opportunities in other projects for those images. Secondly, I could use only the camera I had with me. No popping home to fetch a better camera and restaging the scene later. Sometimes I do take my professional equipment with me but more often than not I have my phone in my pocket and that will have to do. Those are the constraints I have chosen to work within. I try to keep editing to a minimum and this usually only involves cropping to 4:5.
